Millions serve in the Armed Forces and for many it becomes an international career when they are stationed abroad or tasked to work on international security issues.
More than 2.6 million people serve in the US Armed Forces, a group significantly larger than the 1.7 million civil servants of the US government (excluding the postal service). More than 1.4 million are on active duty: 500,000 in the Army, 350,000 in the Navy, 350,000 in the Air Force, and 175,000 in the Marine Corps. In addition, more than 1.2 million Americans serve in their Reserve components and the Air and Army National Guard, and in addition, 40,000 individuals serve in the Coast Guard, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security.
