The main distinction between NGOs in the two countries is that New Zealand NGOs are very much involved with indigenous communities, especially with the iwi people and other Māori communities. New Zealand is actually considered to be a bi-cultural country, with Māori communities playing an integral role in the national identity. When researching New Zealand NGOs, you will encounter the word “Aotearoa” (or New Zealand Aotearoa/Aotearoa New Zealand). Aotearoa is the indigenous Māori name for New Zealand and is used to reflect the country’s bi-cultural identity. You will also encounter many English-Māori bilingual NGOs. One other distinguishing feature is that New Zealand has a relatively large percentage of religious NGOs – even more than Australia.
