Before you make the decision to head abroad for an extended period of time, take the time to assess your personality. It's easy to envision yourself in a beautiful and exotic foreign country, having the time of your life -- but the reality of day-to-day life overseas can be different from what you imagine. A positive outlook, a sense of humor and a hefty dose of flexibility are the traits that will help you navigate your new environment comfortably and deal with the challenges of cross-cultural communication.

Are you the type of person who thrives on adventure and uncertainty? Do you enjoy meeting people from all different walks of life? Or do you prefer to interact with people who have a similar outlook?

Before buying a plane ticket, sit and think about your personality traits. Ask yourself how you'll cope in a variety of potential scenarios abroad. Ask yourself why you are going overseas and what you hope to achieve or learn from the experience. Answer honestly. Building an international career or going abroad for an extended period is extremely rewarding, and if you take the time to consider your skills, abilities and level of adaptability before leaving, you'll have a strong sense of self when you land in your host country. Happy travels!
