Advice from an Experienced Expat

[ID:0855]Start your research several years before you want to go overseas to work. If you don’t have international experience and feel that your International IQ needs improving, now is the time to focus on setting a plan to achieve your objective, which is to live and work overseas. Here are a few tips for setting your goals and objectives.

The first phase in any job search is goal setting, followed by self-analysis. Try not to rush your decisions. Take time to decide what you want to do. Be honest with yourself. Put your pen to paper and outline your objectives, including why you want to go overseas. Your new adventure of working overseas is like anything else in life, it takes time and thought to decide what you want to achieve from the work experience.

Sometimes, I find that visualization techniques are helpful to get the inner feel for the kind of work you want. Take the time to create an image of doing the type of work you want in your desired destination. When you have the right picture, you will get the “ah” feeling. This gives you a focus for finding your new job.
