There are important differences between an international resume and a domestic one. An international resume requires you to demonstrate on paper that you have the required overseas skills and professional experience to qualify for a position. Don't fret if you haven't had a great deal of international experience. There are ways to amp up the value of your current experience to build a cross-cultural resume focus. The main MyWorldAbroad site (for registered users) outlines some of these methods, but here are a few key things to remember about international resumes:

Top Tips

  • International resumes are different: International resumes are longer and more comprehensive than domestic resumes.
  • Target your resume: Tailor your resume to the job you are applying for. List a specific career objective and write your job descriptions and work history in a way that maximizes your skills for the specific job for which you are applying. Your resume doesn't have to be a chronology of your life, it has to prove that you're the best person for a specific job.
  • Be clear about your international objectives: If you are applying at a domestic firm, make clear the fact that you are willing to travel or take a posting abroad.
  • When you email a resume, make sure that it is formatted correctly! This can make or break your application. If an online profile is preferred, be sure to beef up your LinkedIn presence before applying.
  • Pass it around: Ask for other people’s opinions on your resume. This will help you catch editing mistakes, clarify your writing and get creative. If you've networked with experts in your field, ask if they would be willing to review your resume. Just about every opinion will prove valuable.
