Indeed, with the recent expansion of the EU and Russia's joining the G8 (and soon the WTO), the line between Eastern and Western Europe is increasingly blurred. All these dramatic changes, while disruptive, have created many job opportunities for westerners, both inside and outside the new EU. The large cities in the western region of the former Soviet Union are now attracting numerous foreign job seekers. Large and small companies are trying to cash in on the void in capitalist know-how. Job seekers are cashing in on the massive demand for business expertise.
But the road from communism to capitalism has been difficult, and EU membership will not be a panacea for the economic problems of countries like Poland or Hungary.
