Media outlets are awash with tributes to former South African president Nelson Mandela today. Mandela, an icon of the anti-apartheid movement, and the country’s first black president, died Thursday at the age of 95.

Sentenced to life in prison for his revolutionary anti-apartheid actions, Mandela served 27 years in jail before being released in 1990. From racial reconciliation and land reform to the fight against poverty and the quest for justice in the face of human rights abuses, Mandela consistently embodied a spirit of philanthropy, respect, tolerance, resilience and humility. In 1993, he received the Nobel Peace Prize, just one of many hundreds of honors bestowed upon him during his lifetime.

We strongly recommend that you take a moment this week to learn about this complex and fascinating political figure, whose impact will continue to be felt around the world for years to come.

As global citizens, we can be inspired by his actions -- and his words:

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."

"If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his language, that goes to his heart."

"For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others."

"I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended."
