Like it or not, in the globalized, online world, you are constantly building your personal brand. What is a "personal brand," you ask? Well, in simple terms, it's your reputation and what you represent publicly.

Most young people starting out on an internationally-oriented career have not yet had the opportunity to develop a cohesive personal brand; but you can think of it this way: if a potential employer were to Google your name, what would s/he see on the first page of results? Would the results represent your professional/personal values and support your career goals?

In the early phases of your career, it is your experience, your resume, your connections and your online presence that will help you to create your "brand." Keep this in mind as you proceed through your college years, select your extra-curricular activities and build international experience. What "brand" are you creating for yourself? And is it consistent with your international career objectives?

On the international playing field, few qualities are as highly valued as self-knowledge and cross-cultural understanding. So how can you build those skill sets into your brand?

Interning abroad is one fantastic way for you to build international experience and contribute to your profile as a globally-minded young professional. Check out this article from InternViews about using your intern abroad experience to strengthen your personal brand.
